Music has been a way of bringing people together since the beginning of time.  Music can be anything from an individual performing acapella to complex orchestras with dozens of musicians coming together to compose a symphony.  In the past, music has been used for nearly anything imaginable such as tribal gatherings, sporting events, marriages and has even been used to announce an army’s presence. Over time, music has evolved tremendously and today, there are literally thousands of ways to make music.

Where can somebody go to if they’re interested in the history of music?

The answer is The Museum of Making Music in Carlsbad, California.  The museum specializes in the last 100 years of music in the United States.  They have five galleries that lead visitors throughout different time periods of music in the United States.  In addition to their five galleries, The Museum of Making Music regularly features special exhibitions that spotlight specific instruments, ideas, individuals, innovations, or concepts of music making.

The Museum regularly hosts special exhibitions that help us tell the story of instrument innovations and the music products industry.  These exhibitions usually are on offer to the public for a limited time.  Every year, five or six new exhibits are on display to the public and to help preserve their exhibitions, the main points of the exhibits are stored digitally online on their website.

To help visitors understand information that they’re exposed to, tours to the exhibits are also provided.  The museum is  popular with visitors of all ages.  To keep children entertained, they offer field trips that have hands-on activities for schools, with varied activities based on how old the children are.  In addition to schools, The Museum of Making Music regularly hosts youth camps and educational workshops specifically focused on providing an introduction to making music and encouraging musical development for the whole family!

The Museum of Making Music has developed a number of programs that are focused on providing opportunities for adults to learn about and actively participate in making music.  For adults that are interested in learning a new instrument, or those that used to play but haven’t played in awhile, the museum offers orchestra classes for anyone that is interested.  It doesn’t matter if you have never picked up an instrument or are a seasoned professional, the museum has something for all adults.

The museum is a great destination for anyone visiting Carlsbad. You don’t even need to be a music connoisseur to appreciate everything that the museum has to offer. Everyone from children to senior citizens will have something to admire in the museum.
