Dish Our Town eats their way around the world and NYC

Andrew Tolentino is the head writer at Dish Our Town, a family blog of three New Yorkers, writing stories on food and travel, one dish at a time. The Tolentinos took a one-year sabbatical in 2015 to travel all over Southeast Asia and Europe. Now, they’re back home, exploring more of the USA and their hometown, NYC,eating and writing along the way.

1.)Where was the first place that you traveled that made you think WOW—travel is amazing (think history book come to life or …..)

London, England, when I was an undergrad in College. With regards to history, certainly at the top of the ladder; but it was my affinity for the alternative music scene in the ’80s that really drew my attention. It was an instant connection with a popular culture that was different from that back home. This, and how our “English” differed.

2.)If you had unlimited resources, where would you go and what would you do?

The older I get, the more refined my focus has been in where I’d like to spend my time. My answer is Italy. Possibly in Umbria and start an agriturismo with a small vineyard.

3.)What were you afraid to do and how did you find the courage to overcome it?

I was most afraid of spending my savings, and I when I did, I overcame the fear.

4.)What apps do you use regularly that make your life easier?

Google Maps and Uber

5.)What place do you wish more people have seen?

Just about any town in the world that isn’t a major city.

6.)Best advice you have been given and by whom?

“Guilt is a wasted emotion.” – MIck Jagger. I tell this to myself when I order an expensive bottle of wine.

7.)When were you surprised by the kindness of strangers on a trip?

I’m never surprised at the generosity of mankind. I experienced kindness from strangers every day during my travels.

8.)What inspired you to travel for extended periods of time or live in a new country?

For as far back as I remember, the thought always existed. However, it was becoming a father that made me actually execute the plan. I wanted my child to experience my childhood/lifelong dream.

9.)I travel because….

I get hungry.

10.) My favorite travel or business book is…

Not necessarily under the category of travel, but the impetus for my want to travel, “The Sun Also Rises.

11.)  How about hotels?  What’s your favorite or one you’d recommend?

So many to recommend, but when we sit down as a family and narrow it down to having a special place in our hearts, a hotel by the name of Hospice Palau de la Mar in Valencia, Spain tops the list.

Lastly, can you please recommend a resource for up-and-coming travel writers; this could be a course you know, a book, conference…

As for getting writing gigs, look into FWJ (Freelance Writing Jobs). Emails are sent almost daily.

The New York City-based Tolention family writes about food and their travels at Dish Our Town. They believe that the most memorable parts of a journey are meals and food, particularly in more remote locales.
