Our Honeymoon in South Africa

Choosing South Africa as our honeymoon location was the best idea ever. On the 16th of October, my husband and I set off on a six hours flight to Johannesburg.

DAY 1: We checked in at the hotel and when we learnt that we were just few blocks away from Monte Casino, we set off there immediately. For real! That’s a beautiful place, hours passed as we continued sightseeing. The roof was a deceitful one painted sky-blue, so it was hard to tell if it was nightfall, sunset or daybreak outside. While eating our burger and strolling, we came across a poster of ‘Sweeney Todd’ at the theatre. The opera was scheduled to start in 15 minutes, we were just in time. After an amazing 3 hours show, we retired for the night. It was a day well spent.

DAY 2: Set for church, our hotel attendant told us that the church was just around the corner (lol! We had the longest trek ever, but we survived). To prevent future trekking episodes, we got a very nice personal cab driver. Our day 2 was spent at the Lion Park Gauteng. I only get to see lions, tigers, zebras, antelopes and a couple of other animals while watching animal documentary. I felt elated seeing them up, close and personal. What is an experience without selfies? *wide grin* I took a couple of pictures, my best still being the one where I fed the Ostrich and Giraffe.

DAY 3: Johannesburg zoo; this is a place to go to if you appreciate nature, peace and serenity. The highlight of my day was standing less than a stone throw away from an elephant. I recommend you go there if you wish to have a picnic; it is very easy to fall in love with the availability of space. As usual, our picture-loving selves took pictures with the flamingos, hippopotamus, lemur, elephant, sheep, horses, camel, mountain lion, monkeys, vultures…I could go on and on.

DAY 4: Lesedi cultural village. I learnt a lot about five different African cultures, traditional dance acts and music performance. It ended with a wonderful feast at their Nyama Choma restaurant (warning: if you are a vegetarian, you might change your mind about ‘vegetating’ once you enter there. The wide variety of meat is tempting).

DAY 5: Having a spontaneous husband could be a blessing. I heavily loaded myself with day 5’s breakfast and rolled back into bed when my husband woke me up and said we needed to pack. I was confused until he told me he had booked a flight to Cape Town which was to take off in two hours, wonders! That was the fastest I had ever packed, I was done in 10 minutes. Thanks to our reliable cab driver, we made it to the airport in time…off to Cape Town, we flew.

DAY 6: With lots of places to see, we bought a tour ticket. Good advice should not come this free, but I am good person so I will share my opinion. Do you have a place-to-visit-while-alive list? You had better add Cape Town to it. We joined the tour bus from CTICC, our first ride was through the popular Table mountain. People went on the cable car to get to the very top, but my heart said NO to this idea. We should always listen to our heart, so I stayed at my level of elevation enjoying the landscape view before setting off for Camps Bay. The breeze was soothing, the water was blue and cool, the trees were long with waving leaves, the sun was warm and smiling, the people were happy and at rest. These are the little things that make me grateful for life.

DAY 7:V and A waterfront, two oceans aquarium, the penguins (I wish I remember their names), the gold fishes (Nemo), shark, seahorses and almost every aquatic animal, the harbor cruise, Robben Island. Just go there already.

DAY 8: Are you a wine lover? Then you need to find your way to Groot Constantia and Beau Constantia to see the vineyards and taste the white and red wines.

DAY 9: Our Cape Town visit ended. We flew back to Johannesburg. We had lunch with MollyB, a friend. What is a trip if a lady doesn’t go shopping? We went to Nelson Mandela square at Sandton (another good advice- if your woman is a shopaholic, go there with a full wallet or make sure you hold her hands throughout). All in all, it was a wonderful experience from start to finish. I thank God for love, live, family, friends, food, animals, clothes, shoes and an opportunity to share my story. I need everyone to do me a favor, even if its once a year, ‘Go travel.’
